I am increasingly convinced people do not need to create economic value in order to live a fulfilling life. The creation of economic value is not an inherently fulfilling activity. Some people will find meaning in it, but I doubt most will. [[The world's happiest person may be a Buddhist monk]]. People living isolated from the modern world, often in small communities, have above average self-reported happiness. This is despite being materially far worse off, which is something that correlates inversely with happiness. Many other factors more commonly lead to meaning and fulfillment, none of which the development of which AGI is certain to stop. - Mastery in your craft: Even if AI is better than you at it, you can still enjoy the process of mastery. Look at chess. - Autonomy, freedom, having experiences. - Relationships, friends, spouse and having kids. I can absolutely imagine a life that consist of each of these things, where you can lie on your deathbed and be happy for everything you have done. Even in a world run by superintelligence, where people need not do anything at all, there is still space to live exciting, happy and meaningful lives. [[Our societal framework will determine if AGI will be good or bad for humanity]]. Many atheists today have accepted cosmic insignificance, and there is no clear evidence that their mental health or well-being is worse as a result.
